Your Name Anime Movie Review

Makoto Shinkai’s animated out-of-body wonder ‘Your Name.’ has swept the globe with its emotionally gripping storyline and gorgeous hand-drawn animation. Japan’s #1 film of 2016 with a solid 97% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes has since become the highest-grossing anime film of all time, surpassing legendary works of art from Studio Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki including “Spirited Away,” “Princess Mononoke,” “Howl’s Moving Castle” and “Ponyo.”

"Your Name" is a new anime that has received a lot of attention recently. I have heard that it's become the highest grossing anime of all time - even surpassing Spirited Away. While I'm not sure about it being better than Spirited Away, I do find it to be clever, spiritual, funny, and a bit romantically tacky. I enjoyed the comic relief throughout, as it did not detract from the story at any point. The story itself had more depth than I had expected, including the struggles of the girl finding her voice and finally standing up, and the boy finding his softer side. The main characters are interesting and individually strong, and I was intrigued enough to want a sequel. After all, who doesn't want to see the happy ending?
