Home Chef Review

Home Chef offered me some free meals so I could review them for you here. I was really excited about trying it out. You see, I am a horrible cook. I just can't cook anything. I can follow a recipe with step-by-step instructions, but most recipes assume you know a little about cooking. So, I follow them to a fault, and end up adding something at the wrong time, or overcooking, or undercooking, or over-spicing, etc. Once I put a frozen pizza directly on the oven rack because the instructions told me to. What I came back to was a pizza melting through the spaces in the rack and messing up the bottom of the oven.

But how could I mess this one up? Home Chef delivers the meal you ordered with step-by-step instructions on how to prepare and cook the meal. It comes with everything you need to make that meal, in the exact amount you need so there is no waste. The only thing you need to have on hand is salt, pepper, and some oil. You can even order pots, pans, mixing bowls, knives, a cutting board, a baking sheet, a colander, salt, cooking oil, and more. There is no excuse!

So, I started by signing up and checking out the recipes offered. I was happy to see that I could eliminate dairy and meat. Although I am mostly a vegetarian (not 100% committed), I decided to order the following meals and dessert:

Lemon Pepper Steelhead Trout

Rosemary-Cider Chicken

Peanut Butter Cup Smoothie

Each meal comes with two servings. I ordered two different meals so the four of us could try a little of both the chicken and trout. I started preparing and cooking about an hour before dinner. I was impressed with the step-by-step instructions in the recipe along with photos for each step. I knew exactly how everything needed to look along the way.

Since I'm not used to cooking I burned the shallots with the Rosemary-Cider Chicken recipe (oops), but that is the only mistake I made! Everything else went really well. I plated the servings - half a serving of each on every plate so we could all try both recipes. I was surprised my husband wanted to try the Steelhead Trout since he usually hates fish, but he ended up eating every last bite and loved it. In fact, everyone cleared their plates! It was amazing. Dessert was wonderful as well.
